Asia Cup 2025 and Indian Cricket Team news

The Indian cricket team’s travel plans for the Asia Cup 2025 have drawn attention due to a significant departure from previous protocols: the squad will not be assembling in Mumbai nor travelling together, and several high-profile standby players have been excluded from the Dubai trip.

Key Travel Changes for 2025

For the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE, all 15 squad members—led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and vice-captain Shubman Gill—will fly directly from their respective home cities to Dubai. This is a clear break from the usual practice of gathering first in Mumbai.

A senior BCCI official stated that, given Dubai’s proximity and the aim to minimize unnecessary travel and fatigue, it made little sense to require all players to converge and then depart together.

The first practice session for the squad is scheduled at the ICC Academy in Dubai on September 5, following their arrival by the evening of September 4.

Exclusion of Standby Players

The BCCI decided that the five standby players—Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel—will not travel with the main squad to Dubai.

This move underscores a leaner approach, with replacements likely to be flown in only if injuries or emergencies arise during the tournament.

According to BCCI officials, this decision was made to streamline logistics and avoid crowding the traveling party.

The main squad remains at 15 players despite the Asia Cup rules allowing for a 17-member team.

Schedule and Player Commitments

  • Team India will begin their Asia Cup campaign against UAE on September 10, followed by marquee clashes against Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19.

  • The squad includes pacers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who are currently playing in the Duleep Trophy, and Kuldeep Yadav, who is also fulfilling domestic commitments.

  • All players are to report in Dubai by September 4, ensuring enough time for recovery and adjustment before the tournament begins.

Rationale Behind the Changes

BCCI’s move is aimed at logistical efficiency, reducing fatigue, and responding to practical considerations such as domestic commitments and the relatively short flight to Dubai.

As matches come rapidly in the T20 format, keeping players fresh was a priority.
