The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (www.tiss.ac.in), established in the year 1936 is a Deemed to be University, under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, a grant-in-aid Institute under Ministry of Education, Government of India. TISS is a Grade I University as per NAAC assessment 2024.


With four campuses at Mumbai (main campus), Hyderabad, Guwahati and Tuljapur (rural campus), TISS currently offers 05 Undergraduate programmes, 47 Masters' Degree programmes and 20 Ph.D. programmes in a range of socially relevant inter-disciplinary areas of applied Social Sciences including 32 Bachelor of Vocational degree programmes.


Freedom and autonomy shape the positive work ethos and culture of the Institute and facilitate strong linkages between teaching, research, field action and policy engagement. The Institute encourages and supports researchers to engage in foundational, applied, field and action-oriented research, and it also nurtures research collaborations nationally and internationally, with a commitment to creating a just society through education, generation of knowledge and field action initiatives.


The School of Social Work (SSW) promotes education in social work that is democratic, emancipatory. egalitarian, and develops a critical perspective in students. It offers dynamic and relevant programs at the Doctoral, Master's and Certificate levels. It also identifies new areas for social work practice and evolves innovative strategies through practice- based research and field action projects. Other thrust areas of the School are research, networking and liaising with governmental and non-governmental organizations for capacity building, policy and program development, and extension. The School of Social Work, invites applications from interested scholars for Four posts of 'Assistant Professor' to be filled on a contract basis, for a period of Six months based on the performance of the candidate and requirment of the Institute..


Remuneration:

Consolidated salary of Rs. 86,088/- p.m. (Pay Band Rs. 15,600-39,100/- with AGP Rs. 6,000/-in 6 CPC).


Educational Qualification:


Essential Qualification:

A Master's degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in Social Work, preferably with specialisation or other allied fields from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.


Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, Eligibility (A or B)


A. The candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, or a similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET or who are or have been awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments from time to time as the case may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET:


Provided, the candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme prior to July 11, 2009, shall be governed by the provisions of the then existing Ordinances/Bye-laws/Regulations of the Institution awarding the degree and such Ph.D. candidates shall be exempted from the requirement of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of 'Assistant Professor' subject to the or equivalent positions in Universities/Colleges/Institutions fulfilment of the following conditions: -


a) The Ph.D. degree of the candidate has been awarded in a regular mode;


b) The Ph.D. thesis has been evaluated by at least two external examiners;


C) An open Ph.D. viva voce of the candidate has been conducted;


d) The Candidate has published two research papers from his/her Ph.D. work, out of which at least one is in a referred journal;


e) The candidate has presented at least two papers based on his/her Ph.D. work in conferences/seminars sponsored/funded/supported by the UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or any similar agency.


The fulfilment of these conditions is to be certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of the University concerned.


Note: NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET.

B. The Ph.D. degree has been obtained from a foreign university/institution with a ranking among top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by any one of the following:


i. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)


ii. the Times Higher Education (THE) or


iii. the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).


1) Centre for Health and Mental Health- Number of postion: one


The Centre for Health and Mental Health offers two Master's programmes M.A. Social Work in Mental Health and M.A. Social Work in Public Health. 

Through teaching, fieldwork, research, and field action projects, the Centre engages with critical determinants of health and mental health, such as poverty, gender inequities, stigma, social exclusion, and barriers to care, alongside interventions including health promotion, psychosocial support, community-based mental health services, health systems strengthening, and policy advocacy. 

These efforts aim to develop a skilled cadre of social workers equipped to address complex health and mental health challenges across the country.


Eligibility -


Essential:


1) A good academic record with MA Social Work/MSW, preferably with a Ph.D. Degree in Social Work in the field of mental health/Psychiatric Social Work


2) A Master's Degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale, wherever the grading system is followed).


Desirable:


3) A minimum of two years of experience of teaching and/or research in an academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University, College or Accredited Research Institution with a minimum of two publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals


4) Competence to teach, conduct research, supervise field work and guide research studies in areas such as Counselling and Therapeutic Interventions, Child and Adolescent mental health, Gender and Mental Health, Research Methodology in the field of health and mental health


Job responsibilities:


a) Teaching Masters and Bachelors courses in areas such as Counselling and Therapeutic Interventions, Social Work interventions with individuals, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Research Methodology.


b) Conducting and supervising research in the area of mental health and public health


c) Field work supervision in different health and mental health settings such as institutions, hospitals and clinics, community (rural and urban)


d) Mentoring students through classroom teaching, field work and research guidance in the discipline and profession of social work


e) Assisting existing field action projects of CHMH


f) Working with the team of faculty at CHMH in carrying out above responsibilities and also collaboratively writing research, intervention proposals and conducting regional, national and international conferences and colloquiums in the field of health social work


2) Centre for Centre for Livelihoods and Social Innovation (CLSI) - Number of position: one


The Centre for Livelihoods and Social Innovation was established with the purpose of strengthening theoretical understanding and innovative methods, skills, and practices in enabling the poor and marginalised groups and communities to access improved livelihood opportunities and resources. 

The CLSI strives towards exploring alternative models and frameworks, including community-based social entrepreneurship, in enhancing the livelihood opportunities and resource access for the poor. 

It has a mandate to develop talented professionals who are capable of co-designing livelihood strategies and approaches that are grounded in social innovation, empowerment, and opportunity for the poor and marginalised groups. It anchors the M.A. Social Work programme in Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship.


Eligibility criteria


i) A Master's Degree in MA Social Work/MSW with specialization in social entrepreneurship, livelihoods, community organization or a related thematic area, with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale, wherever the grading system is followed).


ii) A Ph.D. Degree in Social Work in the field of Social Entrepreneurship, Livelihoods and Social Innovation.


Desirable:


i) Strong skills of research, teaching and field practice in community-based social entrepreneurship and social innovation in enhancing the livelihood opportunities and resource access for the poor.


ii) A minimum of two years of experience of teaching and / or research in an academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University, College or Accredited Research Institution with a minimum of two publications in peer-reviewed journals.


Job responsibilities:


Teaching in MA Social Work in Livelihoods and Social Innovation


Conducting and supervising research in the area of Livelihoods and Social Innovation


Mentoring students through classroom teaching, field work and research guidance in the discipline and profession of social work


Working with the team of faculty at CLSI in carrying out above responsibilities


3) Centre for Community Organisation and Development Practice-Number of position:one


Centre for Community Organisation and Development Practice (CODP) programme aims to blend a critical socio-political analysis of marginalities of communities with appropriate strategies and approaches in enabling the process of claiming their entitlements and rights. 

The Centre offeres MA Social Work programme in CODP which envisages preparation of a cadre of development practitioners that could effectively respond to the contemporary concerns of marginalised communities and to promote people-centred development.


Eligibility criteria


Essential:


i) A Master's degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in Social Work, preferably with specialisation in Community Development/Organisation or other allied fields from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university,


ii) A Ph.D. Degree in Social Work in the field of Community Development/Organisation or other allied fields.


Desirable:


i) Experience in community-based social entrepreneurship in enhancing the livelihood opportunities and resource access for the poor


ii) A minimum of two years of experience of teaching and / or research in an academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University, College or Accredited Research Institution with a minimum of two publications in peer-reviewed journals.


Job responsibilities:


Teaching in MA Social Work in Community organisation and Development Practice


Conducting and supervising research in the area of Community organisation and Development Practice


Mentoring students through classroom teaching, field work and research guidance in the discipline and profession of social work


Working with the team of faculty at CODP in carrying out above responsibilities


4) Center for Women Centered Social Work- Number of position:one


The Centre focuses on preparing students to locate women as a central category of analysis to evolve an understanding of their condition, position and status and their relationship with men, resources and power in society. 

The key areas the centre engages with, are the study of social construction of women's labour, sexuality, fertility and violence; review impact of economic policies on women's lives, engage with sectoral policies and programs and understand the role of the state and law in defining their position in society.


Eligibility criteria


Essential:


iii) A Master's degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in Social Work, preferably with specialisation in Women's studies or other allied fields from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university,


iv) A Ph.D. Degree in Social Work/ Women's studies or other allied fields.


Desirable:


i) Strong skills of research, teaching and field practice preferably with focus on women and gender issues, gender and development and/or on violence against women.


ii) A minimum of two years of experience of teaching and / or research in an academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University, College or Accredited Research Institution with a minimum of two publications in peer-reviewed journals.


Job responsibilities:


i) Teaching in MA Social Work in Women Centered Social Work


ii) Conducting and supervising research in the area of women and gender issues, gender and development and/or on violence against women.


iii) Mentoring students through classroom teaching, field work and research guidance in the discipline and profession of social work


iv) Working with the team of faculty at WCP in carrying out above responsibilities


Other Conditions:


I. The Institute reserves the right to relax the qualifications of the candidate based on the work experience and to relax age in the case of persons already holding comparable positions in a University/Research Institution of repute.


II. The Institute reserves the right to invite persons for interviews who may not have applied as per the above procedure and not fill up the vacancy advertised.
