(The Ph.D. Programme is affiliated to Jadavpur University, Kolkata)
INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS
Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. Programme of The Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, (CSSSC).
1. SUB-FIELDS FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS
Please note that research proposals that fall outside the sub-fields mentioned below will NOT be considered and such applications will stand cancelled. The CSSSC's decision in this regard will be final.
Economics:
- Labor Economics and Development Economics
- International Trade, and Economics of Healthcare
Anthropology:
- Socio-Cultural Anthropology, Gender and Tribe, Tribal Health and Tribal Education
Cultural Studies
- Ancient boardgame/sedentary game cultures or game cultures (focusing on boardgames)
- The Concept of the Literary
- Conceptual Studies on Science, Technology and Disciplinarity
- Feminist and Postcolonial Theory (focus not on the empirical)
- Deconstruction and related Issues
Political Science
- Political Thought and Political Theory (Indian and Western)
- Aspects of Indian Politics
- Contemporary South Asian Politics
- Cinema and politics
Sociology
- Critical Caste Studies
d) Library fees: Rs. 2000 (refundable)
10. All admissions are provisional.
11. SCHEDULE OF APPLICATION AND ADMISSION PROCESS
The provisional schedule of the application, selection, and admission process is as follows. If any changes are made in this due to unavoidable circumstances, this will be announced on the CSSSC's website and the Notice Board.
a. Notification for PhD admission: 13th August, 2025
b. Last date for receiving applications: 4th September, 2025
c. List of eligible candidates for written Admission Test to be published: 24th September, 2025
d. Written Admission Test: 14th October, 2025
c. Interview List to be published: 30th October, 2025
f. Interviews: Mid November, 2025
g. Provisional list of selected candidates will be published after the approval of the Doctorate Committee, Faculty of Arts, Jadavpur University.
12. Selected candidates will have to carry out research under the supervision of a member of the CSSSC faculty, and will have to register for a Ph. D. degree with Jadavpur University. The CSSSC Doctoral Programme requires students to participate regularly in its academic activities.
OTHER INFORMATION
Course Work is mandatory for all the Ph.D. scholars who will be selected for Ph.D. programme, session 2025 under Faculty of Arts. Course work includes two compulsory courses and two optional courses of four (4) credits each.
An applicant found to be admitted elsewhere or within Jadavpur University for another Ph.D. programme or any other programme during the time of admission, will not be considered for admission.
14. Applicants may note that the Centre has no hostel facilities.
Doctoral Programme at the Centre
Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to Ph.D. Programme 2025. The Ph.D. programme is affiliated to Jadavpur University, Kolkata. After the completion of the programme, students will obtain Jadavpur University’s degree.
